Chapter 7

It quickly became evident to Ginger that as hard as she might try, she and Jordan Mulk were not destined to be anything more than civil acquaintances.

If that.

Jordan seemed completely unaware of this fact, or at least unconcerned, and Lucy was irritatingly smug. Ginger glanced at her watch, noting that another ninety seconds had passed. She was trying to do the mental math and calculate exactly how many seconds of the evening she had to endure out of politeness, silently damning herself for agreeing to ride with someone she’d never met.

If the game lasts three hours, and we have an hour commute altogether… fourteen thousand, four hundred seconds. I’m 1.5% of the way through this.

From the moment Burl opened the Hummer limo door, Ginger was mortified. The place looked like what she imagined an interstellar bordello would be like: the interior leather seating was deep green and gold, and fiber-optic lights shot neon colors in racing patterns through both the ceiling and floor. Beyond a tiny, interior dance floor, Ginger could see a separate room with what appeared to be a half-moon shaped “lounge” and a simulated fireplace.

Several plasma television sets played videos of a scantily-clad pop star dancing through Egyptian pyramids, and the sound of thumping music was deafening. All that, however, was not what distracted Ginger the most: she could not take her eyes off the clear, internally lit, bubble-filled stripper pole holding up the interior of the vehicle.

As Ginger stepped up into the vibrating, base-heavy tube of sound, she did her best to remember her lifelong decorum and tact, even in unusual situations. She knew that she should keep her eyes on her host. She knew she should take Burl’s proffered hand to steady herself as she climbed inside. She knew that she should smile, and wipe the look of fascinated disgust off her face. But something about that pole was so mesmerizing and terrifying that she forgot to do all those things.

Instead, she stared and scrambled, which caused her left foot to drag and catch on an interior step. She felt her body lift and fly, almost horizontally, directly towards the pole. Instinctively, she reached for it, the bubbles growing ever larger as her hand twisted around the heavy plastic. Ginger slung her weight around the pole, executing an awkward spin that dumped her rather haphazardly across from her date.

Jordan Mulk arched a brow and whistled, “Damn. If I’d known you had moves like that, I would’ve brought my video camera.”

Ginger heard Lucy’s muffled grunt of laughter behind her, but refused to turn away from Jordan. She felt her face grow dangerously hot.

“I’m fine, thanks for asking,” Ginger replied, her temper getting the better of her.

“Oh, yes. Yes, you are fine, babydoll.” Jordan responded, patting the leather next to her baggy denim-covered thigh. “Why don’t you dance that fine ass a little closer?”

Ginger pressed her lips together in a taut line. “No, I’m good over here. Way over here. Thanks.”

Jordan shrugged happily, “Whatever you want tonight, babycakes.
